Swedish
Swedish massage is the most traditional form of Western massage, and the most common association with massage in the United States. This "classic" massage is a relatively gentle massage style focused on the body's superficial layers, using mostly light and long strokes and kneading. This is a great modality for relaxation. |
Deep Tissue
Built on the foundation of Swedish massage, deep tissue uses similar techniques, often with a bit more force, using more elbow and knuckle techniques. Deep tissue massage is mainly for working out deep muscle tension or aiding recovery. To achieve this, the therapist must apply greater pressure, and this can sometimes cause some discomfort. As a result, the goal of deep tissue massage is not always for relaxation. Deep pressure isn’t mandatory in deep tissue massage, however. One can reach the deep tissue without being forceful, and other techniques are often used to achieve similar results, such as myofascial work. |
Trigger Point Therapy
First off, what is a trigger point? Trigger points feel like little marbles or knots just under your skin. They are a sensitive area in the muscle or connective tissue (fascia) that becomes painful when compressed. Pressing on a trigger point can cause “referred pain” and can help identify the external area in the body generating the pain. The objective of trigger point therapy is releasing or softening a muscle knot to reduce or eliminate the knot pain and associated pain. Trigger point therapy consists of alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm. Pressure is applied with the fingers, knuckles, and/or elbow in ten to thirty second intervals to effectively alleviate the muscle spasm. |
Myofascial Massage
Myofascial massage, often called myofascial release, is intended to release the restriction in the connective tissue so that you have greater range of motion, less pain, and improved circulation. It applies sustained pressure on target areas of connective tissue (fascia) that surround your muscles and bone, often pulling and stretching them to release muscle tension. This technique is often used in deep tissue and trigger point therapy. |
Sports Massage
Sports massage therapy is a more focused deep tissue massage and may focus on a certain area of the body. It uses a combination of deep and light modalities to loosen muscle knots, improve blood flow, and prevent lactic acid buildup. The aim of sports massage is to reduce the stress and tension that can build up in the soft tissues of the body during exercise. This form of massage is used to: increase endurance. improve performance. Many different movements and techniques are used in sports massage. Examples of these techniques include: Swedish style massage, deep tissue, tapotement (rhythmic striking), vibration, stretching, and trigger point therapy. |
Prenatal Massage
Prenatal massage is a type of massage therapy specifically designed to be used during pregnancy. It differs from a regular massage in the sense that it uses different techniques that are specific to the many anatomical changes a person undergoes during pregnancy and will no way cause harm to the birthing parent or to the baby. Prenatal massage may help relieve some of the aches and pains that come with pregnancy. During a prenatal massage, you will usually be positioned lying on your side rather than on your stomach or back (or at an incline on your back if the massage table has that function). This is especially important during the later stages of pregnancy. Pillows, bolsters, and/or padding are often used to support your neck, back, knees, and feet. |
